It is safe to assume that we all are familiar with the word “Botox.” And, even if you are not familiar with it, do not worry – we will tell you all about it in this article.
The word – “Botox” is being thrown around a lot and very casually in recent modern times. You may have read the word a lot on the internet – in different news articles and blog posts all over the web or you may have heard about Botox from a friend, a celebrity or an internet personality. With the word being repeated this many times, we start to think that we know what Botox is.
Actually, Botox is nothing more than just a marketing brand name for the commercial form of botulinum toxin (BTX). What is botulinum toxin? Well, it is a neurotoxic protein produced by a certain bacteria (like Clostridium botulinum and other such related bacterium species.) Without going too much into the science of it all, what this botulinum toxin does is – it prevents the release of certain neurotransmitter chemicals (acetylcholine) from our nerve fiber (axon) endings at the neuromuscular junction. While this could be a lot of scientific jargon, don’t worry. All you need to know is that this basically causes flaccid paralysis and a botulinum toxin bacterial infection causes botulism which is a rare but potentially life-threatening disease. The botulinum toxin is, in fact, one of the fatal toxins known to us.
While Botox itself derives from toxins, it does not going to kill you. Botox just removes wrinkles. There are 8 different types of botulinum toxin (types A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H) and not all of them will kill you. Some types of botulinum toxin (type A and type B) are used in cosmetics and medicine as well. In smaller doses and in highly purified and distilled forms, the botulinum toxin is relatively safe. And, this is what you know as Botox. There are other commercial forms of the botulinum toxin that are marketed under the brand names as well such as Dysport, Azzalure, Xeomin, Bocouture, Jeuvea, and Myobloc, etc. and they are all used in a variety of medical research in some way or the other.
