Kybella consists of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring substance that breaks down fat cells. The substance is injected into the submental fat (the fat located under the chin), where it damages fat cells that are then reabsorbed into the body. The destruction of fat cells in the area significantly reduces the appearance of fat under the chin and “double chins.” The destruction of the fat cells is permanent.
Kybella is a prescription medication that must be applied by a trained medical professional, such as a doctor or nurse practitioner. It is only approved for use under the chin.
Kybella is a non-invasive treatment that involves a series of small injections under the chin. The procedure only takes a matter of minutes and is known as a “lunchtime procedure”– a treatment that can be completed during the lunch hour and in which patients can return to work directly afterward. The injection portion of the appointment takes an average of 15-20 minutes. After the treatment, you can resume normal activities at once.
Patients often need between one and six Kybella treatments, usually scheduled one month apart. Many patients need two treatments to reach the desired effect. The number of treatments needed depends on several factors, including the amount of fat under the chin and the patient’s desired outcome.
Like all medical procedures, there is a chance of side effects. Kybella’s side effects are temporary and almost always resolve on their own. They include: redness, swelling, pain, and bruising.
“Kybella is a great option for those who don’t want to have surgery to reduce the appearance of a double chin,” said Surgical Arts Centre nurse practitioner Meagan Gray, who is trained to apply Kybella. “The procedure doesn’t take long, you can return to normal activities right away, and there are minimal side effects. Just improving the profile of the chin area makes it appear as if you’ve lost ten pounds.”
Kybella is ideal for patients who are healthy, eat right, and exercise, but have trouble with the fatty area under their chin. Kybella can be used on both men and women.
“I am a runner and I know how it goes,” said Gray. “You can exercise and eat right and work on your body until you are blue in the face, and some parts of your body just aren’t how you want them. Kybella is one of the ways that you can look and feel better.”
Kybella is only approved for patients over 18 and for those who are in generally good health. You should not undergo Kybella treatments if you have an infection in the area of your chin. You should also not have Kybella treatments if you are pregnant if you are breastfeeding, if you have certain blood conditions, or if you are taking certain medications.
