In 2015, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved Cynosure’s SculpSure cosmetic procedure, finding that it was a safe and effective way to reduce fat cells in the flank area. Following the approval, cosmetic centers and medical spas across the United States have begun to offer SculpSure treatments to patients who wish to significantly reduce the fat cells in their abdominal area, including Aesthetics Medical Spa and Skin Care Center.

But while the medical professionals who utilize SculpSure in their offices understand how the procedure works–and why it is effective–many patients are still unsure of how a non-invasive and fast procedure can reduce fat and slim the middle. In fact many are doubtful about such an effective option now exists. In this post, we will take a close look at the science behind SculpSure.

Using Temperature to Injure Fat Cells

At the heart of SculpSure is the hyperthermic laser: a light that heats fat cells to a temperature that causes many of them to rupture. These damaged fat cells are then absorbed by the body over the weeks following the therapy. Specifically, SculpSure involves using a diode laser light on the the skin on the flank at temperatures ranging from 42 to 47 degrees Celsius. During a typical SculpSure treatment, which lasts about 25 minutes per targeted area, about 30 percent of fat cells are destroyed by the laser.

  • How does the hyperthermic laser harm fat cells without harming anything else in the body? During the treatment, when the fat cells are being heated by the laser, the skin is being chilled and kept from damage by the applicator head. The skin is preserved and kept from harm no matter the tone of the skin–both those with dark skin and light skin can benefit from the treatment.

Using temperature to damage fat cells is not a new concept. Before SculpSure was developed, a different therapy, called CoolSculpting, used low temperatures to damage fat cells through freezing. While CoolSculpting destroys a comparable number of fat cells, the treatments take about twice as long. In addition, while CoolScupting involves using suction on the skin, which can cause discomfort, SculpSure only utilizes light.
